Why is my site not showing in AI Overviews?

Usually for one of five reasons, checked in this order: the query does not trigger an AI Overview, the page is not indexed, snippets are blocked, the page does not answer the exact question near the top, or other sources say something different. Ranking well is not enough: Ahrefs found only about 38% of cited pages also rank in the top 10.

Facts

Does ranking on page one guarantee a place in AI Overviews?

No. Ahrefs' March 2026 study found that most cited pages were not in the top 10 for that query, because the AI Overview also draws on related searches and picks passages that answer the question directly. A page can rank first and still not be the one quoted.

How do I know if a query shows an AI Overview at all?

Search it signed out or in a private window, in the country and language of your customers, several times. Many queries show no AI Overview, and the answer can change between searches. If none appears, there is nothing to be left out of for that query.

What do I check on the page itself?

Confirm with URL Inspection in Search Console that the page is indexed and that no nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex rule blocks it. Then read the top of the page: does it answer the question in the first lines, with a fact or number a reader can check?

Where do I see AI Overview impressions in Search Console?

In the generative AI performance report, which counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. It shows impressions, not clicks, and it only appears once a site has enough of them.

easyIndex reads Search Console next to the AI visitors and AI crawler reads it records, so you see which pages are shown and which bring visits.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the query shows an AI Overview. Search it signed out, in your customers' country and language, several times.
  2. Check indexing. Run URL Inspection in Search Console on the page you expect to be cited.
  3. Check snippet rules. Look for nosnippet, max-snippet:0, data-nosnippet around the answer, or noindex.
  4. Put the answer first. Answer the exact question in the first lines, with a checkable fact or number.
  5. Match your facts elsewhere. Make sure prices, hours and details agree with your other profiles and listings.
  6. Watch the impressions. Follow the page in Search Console's generative AI report for a few weeks.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every query shows an AI Overview.
  • Blocking snippets and then expecting to be quoted in AI answers.
  • Burying the answer under a long introduction.
  • Buying "AI Overview optimisation" before checking indexing.

How easyIndex solves it

Your coding agent fixes and publishes the pages over MCP; easyIndex audits each one for the answer, facts and snippet rules, checks it live, notifies Bing via IndexNow and measures AI visitors and AI crawler reads, and records which sources ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini cite for your tracked questions in the monthly citation scan your agent runs. US$ 30 per website a month, with a 7-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no extra technical requirement beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Why does my competitor appear and I do not?

Their page may answer the question more directly or match related searches the AI Overview runs. Compare the first lines of both pages.

How long after a fix will I show up?

Google has to recrawl the page first, and appearing is never guaranteed; watch impressions in Search Console over the following weeks.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but keep my ranking?

Snippet controls such as nosnippet limit how your content is shown, but they also limit the normal snippet in results.
