What is the GEO checklist for a website?
A GEO checklist covers four stages in order: measure first (analytics, Search Console, sitemap), let AI crawlers in, publish one page per buyer question in the shape AI quotes, then publish in audited batches and review every month. Each item is something you can check on the live site, not an opinion, and skipping the measurement leaves you nothing to compare against.
Facts
- Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no extra technical requirement. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
- OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers)
- Bing said on July 31, 2025 that the sitemap lastmod field remains a key signal, while changefreq and priority are ignored. (Bing Webmaster Blog: Sitemaps in AI powered search (Jul 2025))
- An IndexNow submission is shared with all participating search engines and can carry up to 10,000 URLs per request. (IndexNow FAQ)
- In the KDD 2024 GEO study, adding citations, quotations and statistics was among the methods that raised visibility in generative answers by up to 40%. (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (KDD 2024))
What is on the GEO checklist?
The checklist has 12 checks across 4 stages, in the order easyIndex's method runs them:
| Stage | Check | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Setup | Analytics installed on every page | The tracking script loads on the live site |
| 1. Setup | Search Console connected | The property is verified and shows data |
| 1. Setup | Sitemap sent, with real lastmod | Search Console and Bing show it as read |
| 2. Mapping | AI crawlers allowed | robots.txt, CDN and firewall let OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot and others in |
| 2. Mapping | Offers and buyer questions listed | Each offer has its list of questions |
| 2. Mapping | Content is in the HTML | The text shows without running JavaScript |
| 3. Batch | Base pages per offer | What it is, how it works, price, requirements, steps, risks, choosing, FAQ |
| 3. Batch | Direct answer of 35 to 70 words | The first block answers the question alone |
| 3. Batch | At least 3 facts with sources | Each fact has a number and a link |
| 3. Batch | Same facts everywhere | Price and terms match across pages and languages |
| 3. Batch | Published at once, checked live | Every page passes on the live site, then IndexNow is pinged |
| 4. Monthly | Results reviewed | AI visits and crawler reads per page decide the next batch |
Why does measurement come first?
Measurement comes first because without a starting point you cannot tell whether the pages changed anything. Install analytics, connect Search Console and send the sitemap before touching content, then every later number is compared with where the site started.
What shape should each page have?
Each page answers one question: a title with the question, a direct answer of 35 to 70 words, at least 3 sourced facts, sections headed by questions, common mistakes, 4 FAQs and 4 to 6 related links. AI assistants lift passages, so each block must make sense alone.
How often should I go through the checklist?
Stages 1 and 2 are done once and rechecked when the site changes; stage 3 repeats with every batch; stage 4 runs every month. easyIndex runs this loop with your coding agent and verifies each check itself, so a step completes on evidence, not on a report.
Step by step
- Install measurement. Analytics on every page, Search Console connected and the sitemap sent.
- Open the site to AI crawlers. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot and the other search crawlers in robots.txt, the CDN and the firewall.
- Map offers and questions. List what the business sells and the questions buyers ask about each offer.
- Write the base pages. One page per question, in the shape above, with sourced facts and consistent prices.
- Audit, publish and verify. Check every draft, publish the batch at once, verify it live and ping IndexNow.
- Review monthly. See which pages AI crawlers read and which brought visitors, and plan the next batch from it.
Common mistakes
- Starting with content before analytics and Search Console, so there is no baseline.
- Publishing page by page, so no change can be compared with what was live.
- Checking robots.txt but not the firewall or CDN, which can block AI crawlers on their own.
- Treating the checklist as done once, while the monthly review is what decides the next pages.
How easyIndex solves it
easyIndex turns this checklist into steps for your coding agent over MCP and verifies each one itself on the live site, then measures AI visitors and crawler reads per page, for US$ 30 per website a month, with a 7-day free trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is the GEO checklist different from an SEO checklist?
It shares the basics, like indexing and sitemaps, and adds AI crawler access, the answer-first page shape and AI visit measurement.
Do I need llms.txt on the checklist?
It is optional. AI search crawlers read your normal pages; what they need is access and clear answers.
How many pages does the first batch have?
In easyIndex's method a batch stays at 20 pages or fewer so it can be audited as a whole; main offers come first.
If I complete the checklist, will AI recommend my company?
No one can promise that. The checklist removes the reasons AI cannot find or quote you, and the results are measured.
