Do ChatGPT and AI Overviews respect hreflang on a multilingual site?
Partly, and only on Google's side. AI Overviews and AI Mode link to pages in Google's index, where hreflang helps Google show the right language version, but Google has published nothing about hreflang inside its AI features. OpenAI's crawler documentation does not mention hreflang at all. What works for both: one URL per language, fully translated text in the HTML, and correct hreflang.
Facts
- Google says hreflang tells it which pages are localized variations of the same content, and that HTML tags, HTTP headers and sitemaps are 3 equivalent ways to declare it. (Google Search Central: Tell Google about localized versions of your page)
- Each language version must list itself and all other versions; if two pages don't point to each other, Google ignores the tags. (Google Search Central: Tell Google about localized versions of your page)
- Google does not use hreflang or the HTML lang attribute to detect a page's language; it uses algorithms on the content. (Google Search Central: Tell Google about localized versions of your page)
- Google recommends a different URL for each language version and advises against redirecting visitors by their perceived language, partly because Googlebot usually crawls from the USA. (Google Search Central: Managing multi-regional and multilingual sites)
- To appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search; Google lists no extra technical requirement. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
- OpenAI's crawler documentation lists 4 user agents, OAI-SearchBot, OAI-AdsBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User, and does not mention hreflang or language versions. (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers)
Do Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use hreflang?
Indirectly. They link only to pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search, and hreflang is how Google learns which indexed page is the Portuguese, Spanish or English version of the same content.
Google has not documented how its AI features choose between language versions. Treat correct hreflang as the floor, not a guarantee.
Does ChatGPT use hreflang?
There is no public evidence that it does. OpenAI documents which crawlers it runs and what blocking each one does, and says nothing about hreflang or language versions.
What ChatGPT's search crawler can read is the page itself. A page in the reader's language, with its own URL and complete text, gives ChatGPT something in that language to cite.
What makes AI answers cite the right language version?
The same basics that make Google show the right version, done fully:
- One URL per language, such as /pt/ and /es/, never one URL that switches language by cookie or browser setting
- The whole page translated, not just the menu and buttons
- The translated text in the server-rendered HTML, so crawlers that skip JavaScript can read it
- hreflang on every version, listing itself and all the others, plus an x-default fallback
- Every language version in the sitemap
Which multilingual setups make AI cite the wrong language?
These are the setups Google's own guidance warns against, and they hide versions from any crawler:
| Setup | What a crawler sees | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-redirect by IP or Accept-Language | Only the version for the crawler's location, usually the USA | Show a language link instead of redirecting |
| Same URL, language from a cookie | One language only | A separate URL per language |
| Only menus translated | Pages that look duplicated across languages | Translate the main content |
| hreflang without return links | Tags Google ignores | Every version lists every other version |
How do I check hreflang on my site?
Fetch one page per language and read the hreflang links in the raw HTML, then check that the site does not redirect by language. Ask your coding agent to run the same check on every template.
# The hreflang links one page declares curl -s https://www.example.com/pt/pricing | grep -o '<link[^>]*hreflang[^>]*>' # Each language version must list itself and every other version, plus x-default # Does the site redirect by language? A 3xx here means yes curl -sI -H "Accept-Language: pt-BR" https://www.example.com/ | head -1
How does easyIndex handle each language?
easyIndex treats each language version as its own page: your coding agent writes it, easyIndex audits it when submitted and checks it on the live site, and the dashboard shows AI-assistant visitors and AI crawler reads per page, so you see which language versions are actually read.
Step by step
- Give each language its own URL. Ask your coding agent to move any cookie or browser-based language switch to paths such as /pt/ and /es/.
- Stop automatic redirects. Remove redirects by IP or Accept-Language and show a visible link to the other languages instead.
- Add complete hreflang. Have every version list itself, all the others and an x-default, with ISO 639-1 language codes.
- Put every version in the sitemap. List each language URL so search engines find all of them.
- Check the live HTML. Run the curl check on one page per language after the deploy.
Common mistakes
- Redirecting by browser language, so crawlers from the USA only ever see the English version.
- Translating the menu and leaving the page body in one language.
- Adding hreflang on the English pages only, without return links from the other versions.
- Using a country code alone, such as "br", where hreflang needs a language code first.
How easyIndex solves it
easyIndex never edits your site: your coding agent publishes each language version, guided over MCP, and a step completes only on evidence easyIndex checks on the live site. US$ 30 per website a month, every feature included, with a 7-day free trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is hreflang a ranking factor for AI answers?
Google describes hreflang as a way to tell it about localized versions, not as a ranking factor, and has published nothing specific about its AI features and hreflang.
Why does ChatGPT cite my English page for a question in Portuguese?
Often because the Portuguese version is missing, only partly translated, redirected or not readable without JavaScript. OpenAI has not said how ChatGPT picks a language version.
Do I need x-default?
Google recommends it as the fallback page for visitors whose language matches none of your versions; it is optional but cheap to add.
Does the HTML lang attribute replace hreflang?
No. Google says it uses neither hreflang nor lang to detect a page's language; hreflang links the versions, the content sets the language.
