What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews is the AI summary shown above normal Google results; AI Mode is a separate conversational search tab that runs many searches per question and writes a longer answer. Both draw on Google's index, but an Ahrefs study found they cite the same pages only 13.7% of the time, so ranking in one does not mean appearing in the other.

Facts

How do AI Overviews and AI Mode differ?

They share the index but differ in where they appear, how long they are and what they cite.

Where it appearsAbove the regular resultsIts own tab, as a conversation
Answer lengthShort summaryLonger answer with follow-ups
Sources cited (Ahrefs)No citations in 11% of answersCitations in 97% of answers

Do I need different pages for each one?

No. Google's requirement is the same for both: an indexed page eligible for a snippet. Because AI Mode fans a question out into sub-questions, pages that answer the follow-ups (price, comparison, how-to) give it more to cite.

How do I measure each one?

Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions from both features and no clicks. Visits that arrive from either one show up as Google traffic, so the practical measure is which pages gain impressions in that report and which receive visitors.

Which one matters more for a small business?

AI Overviews reaches far more people, while AI Mode names more brands per answer. Being clear and specific helps in both, so there is no reason to choose one.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a page cited in AI Overviews will also be cited in AI Mode.
  • Looking for clicks in the generative AI report: it only counts impressions.
  • Writing one long page instead of pages that answer the likely follow-up questions.
  • Hiding prices or key facts in images that no feature can quote.

How easyIndex solves it

easyIndex guides your coding agent to build the pages that answer the follow-ups, audits and checks each one live, connects Search Console to record your starting point and measures AI visitors per page, and records which sources ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini cite for your tracked questions in the monthly citation scan your agent runs; it costs US$ 30 per website a month after a 7-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode replacing AI Overviews?

No. Both run side by side: AI Overviews inside the regular results and AI Mode as its own tab.

Can I opt out of one and not the other?

No separate control is documented; snippet controls such as nosnippet apply to Google's AI features as a whole.

Does structured data help in AI Mode?

Google lists no extra technical requirement for either feature; structured data helps Google understand the page, as in regular search.

Why does Search Console show impressions but no clicks?

The generative AI report counts only impressions; clicks stay in the regular performance report.
