Does IndexNow get my new pages into ChatGPT faster?

Not directly. IndexNow tells Bing, Yandex and the other participating engines that a page is new or changed, which can make Bing find it sooner. OpenAI's crawler documentation does not mention IndexNow, and Google is not a participant. Any effect on ChatGPT goes through Bing, which Microsoft announced as ChatGPT's default search experience in 2023. No source says IndexNow puts pages in ChatGPT.

Facts

  • IndexNow lists six participating engines: Amazon, Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep; one submission is shared with all of them. (IndexNow FAQ)
  • Bing states that using IndexNow does not guarantee that pages will be crawled or indexed. (Bing: Get started with IndexNow)
  • One IndexNow POST can carry up to 10,000 URLs, and the site proves ownership with a key file of 8 to 128 characters. (IndexNow documentation)
  • On May 23, 2023 Microsoft announced that Bing was coming to ChatGPT as the default search experience. (Microsoft: Build 2023 announcement (May 2023))
  • OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot decides whether a site appears in ChatGPT search, and its crawler page does not mention IndexNow or Bing. (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers)

What does IndexNow actually do?

IndexNow sends a short notice, the list of URLs that changed, to the participating engines. They still decide when to crawl and whether to index; the notice only saves them from waiting for their next visit.

What is documented and what is a marketing claim?

Separate what the engines and OpenAI state from what plugins and apps promise.

ClaimStatus
IndexNow notifies Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Amazon and YepDocumented by IndexNow
IndexNow guarantees crawling or indexingFalse: Bing and IndexNow say it does not
Google uses IndexNowNot listed as a participant
IndexNow notifies ChatGPT or OpenAINot documented anywhere by OpenAI
Bing feeds ChatGPT searchAnnounced by Microsoft in 2023; OpenAI also runs its own crawler

So what reaches ChatGPT?

A page ChatGPT search can cite needs to be open to OAI-SearchBot, readable in plain HTML and good at answering the question. IndexNow helps the Bing side be current; it does not replace the other three.

How do I set up IndexNow on a site in a repository?

Two pieces: a key file at the root of the site and one POST after each deploy with the new or changed URLs. Your coding agent can add both in a few minutes.

# 1. A key file at the root of the site (8 to 128 characters, letters, digits, dashes)
#    https://www.example.com/3f8a2c9d41b7e6f0.txt  -> contains: 3f8a2c9d41b7e6f0

# 2. After each deploy, send the new or changed URLs
curl -X POST "https://api.indexnow.org/IndexNow" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8" \
  -d '{
    "host": "www.example.com",
    "key": "3f8a2c9d41b7e6f0",
    "urlList": ["https://www.example.com/new-page"]
  }'

# 200 = received; 202 = received, key check pending; 403 = key file not found

How does easyIndex handle IndexNow?

Once a content batch is published and checked live, easyIndex resends the sitemap and tells Bing through IndexNow, so your coding agent does not have to remember it. Your site stays yours: the agent makes every change, easyIndex verifies.

Step by step

  1. Create the key. Ask your coding agent to generate a key of 8 to 128 characters and serve it as {key}.txt at the root of the site.
  2. Send after each deploy. Add a step that POSTs the new or changed URLs to api.indexnow.org with host, key and urlList.
  3. Check the response. Expect 200 or 202; a 403 means the key file was not found on the live site.
  4. Confirm in Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing says submitted URLs can be checked there.
  5. Keep the sitemap. IndexNow complements the sitemap; Google still finds pages through it and Search Console.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for an app that promises IndexNow for ChatGPT as if it notified OpenAI.
  • Expecting IndexNow to update Google, which is not a participating engine.
  • Sending every URL of the site on each deploy instead of only the new or changed ones.
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt while counting on IndexNow to reach ChatGPT.

How easyIndex solves it

Your coding agent publishes each batch over MCP; easyIndex checks every page live, resends the sitemap, tells Bing through IndexNow and shows which AI crawlers read each page. US$ 30 per website a month, with a 7-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need IndexNow to appear in ChatGPT?

No source says so. It can help Bing see new pages sooner; ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot access and on how well the page answers.

Does Google use IndexNow?

Google is not among the participating engines listed by IndexNow. For Google, use the sitemap and Search Console.

Do I have to submit to each engine?

No. IndexNow says a submission to one participating engine is shared with all the others.

How many URLs can I send at once?

Up to 10,000 URLs in one POST, according to the IndexNow documentation.
