Brand mentions vs citations in AI search: what is the difference?

A mention is when an AI assistant names your company in its answer; a citation is when it lists a page as a source, usually with a link. A mention builds awareness but sends no visit by itself. A citation can bring a visit you can measure, but the cited page may not be yours or may not recommend you. You want both, and they grow from different work.

Facts

What exactly is a mention and what is a citation?

A mention is your brand's name in the text of an answer. A citation is a source the assistant shows next to or under the answer. They can appear together or apart.

"Acme is a popular choice" with no linkYesNoAwareness, no measurable visit

Which one brings visits?

Only a citation that links to your own page can bring a visit, and few people click: Pew saw about 1% clicking a link inside Google's AI summary. A mention can still lead someone to search for your name later, which shows up as a branded search rather than an AI visit.

How do I grow mentions?

Mentions come from what the web says about you: reviews, directories, lists, forums and press that name your company for a specific use. Keep the same name, category and facts everywhere, so the assistant connects them to you.

How do I grow citations to my own site?

Citations come from pages that answer one question directly, with the answer at the top, checkable facts and dates, and that AI crawlers can read. One page per question works better than one long page for everything.

How do I measure each one?

Mentions need someone to ask the assistants your customers' questions and read the answers, by hand or with a monitoring tool, because answers vary between runs. Citations show up in Bing's AI Performance report, as impressions in Search Console and as visits tagged by the assistant.

easyIndex measures the citation side: in its monthly scan your coding agent asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini your tracked questions and easyIndex records which sources each answer cited, and on your own site it measures AI visitors and which AI crawlers read each page.

Common mistakes

  • Counting mentions as traffic when they bring no visit by themselves.
  • Celebrating a citation without checking whether the answer recommends you or a competitor.
  • Using a different company name or description on each profile, so mentions do not add up.
  • Judging AI visibility from a single prompt run once.

How easyIndex solves it

Your coding agent writes the pages that earn citations, over MCP; easyIndex audits each one, checks it live, notifies Bing via IndexNow and measures AI visitors and AI crawler reads, and records which sources ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini cite for your tracked questions in the monthly citation scan your agent runs, so you see what citations actually bring. Frequently asked questions

Is a mention without a link worth anything?

Yes, as awareness: it puts your name in front of someone deciding. It just cannot be measured as a visit to your site.

Why does the AI cite my page but recommend a competitor?

Your page may explain the topic well while other sources describe a rival as the answer to the specific need. A page about your own offer, with checkable facts, gives it a reason to name you.

Can I see mentions in Search Console?

No. Search Console shows impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, not whether your brand was named in the text.

Does a citation in ChatGPT show up in my analytics?

When someone clicks it, yes: OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the link.
