AI search statistics 2026
ChatGPT had over 800 million weekly users in October 2025, and Google's AI Overviews over 2 billion monthly users by July 2025. When an AI summary appeared, Pew saw users click a result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one. Each figure below has its source and date, so you can check it before quoting it.
Facts
- Sam Altman said on October 6, 2025 that more than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week, up from 500 million at the end of March 2025. (TechCrunch: ChatGPT hits 800M weekly active users (October 2025))
- Google's AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users and AI Mode over 100 million monthly active users in the US and India, Alphabet said in July 2025. (Alphabet Q2 2025 earnings call)
- Pew found US users clicked a search result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and a link inside the summary in about 1% (March 2025 data). (Pew Research Center: Google users click less when an AI summary appears (July 2025))
- SE Ranking ran 10,000 keywords through AI Mode three times on one day in June 2025: on average only 9.2% of the cited URLs were the same. (SE Ranking: AI Mode research (August 2025))
- 75% of 7,683 pages cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity from March to June 2026 had been updated within a year. (Seer Interactive: content recency and AI visibility (July 2026))

How many people use AI search?
Hundreds of millions, by the companies' own figures:
| Figure | Value | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT weekly users | Over 800 million | October 2025 | OpenAI CEO, reported by TechCrunch |
| AI Overviews monthly users | Over 2 billion | July 2025 | Alphabet earnings call |
| AI Mode monthly active users (US and India) | Over 100 million | July 2025 | Alphabet earnings call |
| Brazilians who have used AI | 77% (62% in 2025) | March 2026 | Bain Consumer Pulse |
Do AI answers send clicks to websites?
Fewer than classic results. In Pew's March 2025 data a result was clicked in 8% of Google visits with an AI summary and 15% without one; links inside the summary got about 1%.
That does not make AI visibility worthless: the people who do click arrive after reading an answer about you. It means visits have to be measured directly instead of assumed from rankings.
How stable are AI answers?
Not very. SE Ranking found only 9.2% of exact URLs repeated across three same-day AI Mode runs, and only 10.7% overlap between AI Mode and AI Overviews for the same keywords. A single screenshot of an answer is a sample, not a measurement.
Why do AI search statistics contradict each other?
Most roundup pages copy each other; before quoting a number, check:
- Who measured it, and whether they sell a tool the number promotes
- The date of the data, not of the article
- The market and language (most studies use US English prompts)
- What was counted: users, visits, sessions, answers or citations
What do these numbers mean for my website?
They describe the market, not your site. Your own figures are the visitors who arrive from AI assistants and the AI crawlers that read your pages; easyIndex measures both per page, which is the practical way to know whether these trends reach you.
Common mistakes
- Quoting a statistic from a roundup without opening the original source.
- Mixing weekly users, monthly users and visits as if they were the same thing.
- Applying US English data to another market without saying so.
- Judging your own visibility from market figures instead of your own visits.
How easyIndex solves it
easyIndex gives you your own numbers: your coding agent builds the pages over MCP, easyIndex audits each one, checks it live and measures AI visitors and AI crawler reads per page, and records which sources ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini cite for your tracked questions in the monthly citation scan your agent runs. It costs US$ 30 per website a month, with a 7-day free trial.
