Does structured data (schema) help AI cite my site?
Structured data does not earn AI citations by itself: Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It still helps machines read the page without ambiguity, so add JSON-LD for the organization, the page, prices and the FAQ, and keep every value identical to the visible text.
Facts
- Google states there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and recommends that structured data match the visible text. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
- Google recommends JSON-LD as the format for structured data when the site's setup allows it. (Google Search Central: Introduction to structured data)
- In a case study Google cites, Rotten Tomatoes measured a 25% higher click-through rate on pages with structured data, across 100,000 pages. (Google Search Central: Introduction to structured data)
- Google's guidelines say not to mark up content that is not visible to readers, and that valid markup does not guarantee a rich result. (Google Search Central: Structured data general guidelines)
- In the KDD 2024 GEO study, changes to the visible text (sources, quotations, statistics) raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (KDD 2024))
What does structured data do for AI assistants?
Structured data states the page's facts in a fixed vocabulary from schema.org: who the company is, what the page is, what a product costs, which questions it answers. That makes a fact harder to misread, but the text the assistant quotes is still the visible page.
Which schema types should a business page carry?
A few types cover most business pages; mark up only what the page shows:
- Organization: name, address of the site, contact
- WebPage or Article, with headline and dateModified
- Product or Service with Offer, when the page states a price
- FAQPage, when the page shows the questions and answers
- BreadcrumbList, for where the page sits in the site
What does a JSON-LD block look like?
One script in the page's HTML, with a graph of the types the page shows:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@graph": [
{ "@type": "Organization", "@id": "https://example.com/#org", "name": "Example Clinic", "url": "https://example.com/" },
{ "@type": "WebPage", "url": "https://example.com/dental-implant/price",
"headline": "How much does a dental implant cost?", "dateModified": "2026-10-09",
"publisher": { "@id": "https://example.com/#org" } },
{ "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [
{ "@type": "Question", "name": "Is the first visit free?",
"acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes, the first visit is free." } } ] }
]
}
</script>How does easyIndex handle structured data?
easyIndex's audit checks that each page has JSON-LD equal to the visible text: organization, product and prices, FAQ, article with dateModified and breadcrumb. Your coding agent adds it in the same change as the page, and easyIndex checks it again on the live site.
Step by step
- List the facts the page shows. Company name, price, date of the last check, the questions on the page.
- Write one JSON-LD graph. Organization, WebPage, and the Offer and FAQPage only where the page shows them.
- Render it in the server HTML. Put the script in the page as served, not injected later by JavaScript.
- Validate it. Run Google's Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator, and fix every error.
Common mistakes
- Marking up reviews, prices or questions that are not on the page.
- A price in the JSON-LD that differs from the price in the text.
- Expecting schema alone to bring citations while the visible text stays thin.
How easyIndex solves it
easyIndex has your coding agent add JSON-LD to every page of the batch over MCP, audits it against the visible text and checks it live. US$ 30 per website a month, with a 7-day free trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is JSON-LD better than Microdata?
Google accepts both when valid and recommends JSON-LD because it is easier to keep in one place.
Does FAQ markup still help?
It describes the questions on the page clearly. Do not count on a special search result from it; Google shows no guarantee for any rich result.
Can wrong structured data hurt?
Markup that does not match the page breaks Google's guidelines and can make the page ineligible for rich results.
Do ChatGPT and Claude read JSON-LD?
Their makers do not document how they use it. Keep the facts in the visible text, which every assistant reads.
